Pottery Wheel

A pottery wheel is a machine used in the shaping (known as throwing) of clay into round ceramic ware. The wheel may also be used during the process of trimming excess clay from leather-hard dried ware that is stiff but malleable, and for applying incised decoration or rings of colour.

Types of Pottery Wheels:

  1. Kick Wheel: A traditional type of pottery wheel powered by a foot pedal. The potter sits on a bench and uses their foot to rotate the wheel head.
  2. Electric Wheel: A modern type of pottery wheel powered by electricity. It offers variable speeds and is more convenient to use.

Key Components of a Pottery Wheel:

  • Wheel Head: The rotating platform where the clay is shaped.
  • Pedal: Used to control the speed of the wheel head (in kick wheels).
  • Motor: Powers the wheel head in electric wheels.
  • Frame: The base of the wheel, providing stability.

The Process of Pottery Throwing:

  1. Centering the Clay: A lump of clay is placed on the wheel head and centered using the potter’s hands.
  2. Opening the Clay: The potter uses their fingers to create a hollow form in the center of the clay.
  3. Pulling the Walls: The potter pulls the walls of the vessel upwards, shaping it into the desired form.
  4. Trimming: Once the vessel is shaped, it is trimmed to remove excess clay and refine the form.

Applications of Pottery Wheels:

  • Creating pottery: Bowls, plates, vases, and other ceramic objects.
  • Art and Craft: Expressing creativity and producing unique pieces.
  • Therapy: Pottery can be a therapeutic activity, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.

By mastering the art of pottery wheel throwing, one can create beautiful and functional ceramic pieces.
